INTERVIEW ABOUT THE DEBUT

Nowadays we expect a debut album to be released very early in a musician's life. But there are definitely exceptions. Why take this step now?

People hear my song … (draft)

My debut took a long time due to many life projects. In between I did some live band projects. The most recent appearance of the "Worldbeats Creative" band project was in July 2012 at the "MitAfrika-Festival" in Cologne and in August 2012 at the Culture and Music Festival in Waldbröl - OpenAir.

Personal structures always play a role for each member when working with other artists.

This meant that the ensemble had to be partially restructured after these two concerts. And then life got in the way. I got married, we built a house (my second one by the way) and soon 4 years had passed.

"People hear my song …". First SINGLE, release planned for spring 2020.

In 2016 I decided to start my first album and band project again. I continued to set up my music studio and started to prepare the compositions. Production of the debut album began in the second half of 2019, after I had just returned from Namibia with wonderful inspiration.

As a young person directly after my civilian service it was not yet clear to me whether I wanted to become a musician or whether I wanted to work in another creative field. So it was up for debate, whether I should participate in various band projects and work on my own compositions, or if I should pursue my wide-ranging versatility in the field of design. Two passions that didn't quite fit together.

I had offers from bands that had interesting tours, but I couldn't really imagine sitting in a tour bus and moving "homeless" from one place to another.

I knew from many concerts that as a drummer you are always the first one to dismantle your equipment after the performance. You have little time to experience the excitement after a concert and share it with the audience.

I felt that there was a lot of love for me at the concerts and that the concert gave me an indescribably beautiful feeling. It's especially nice at a party for me when I'm one of the musicians.

At the same time there was a great need for security on my part, which I could not satisfy by living as a musician. I very often admire the dedication and courage that many musicians have, who can or perhaps must follow their musical projects almost exclusively driven by passion. I couldn't do that because I couldn't really relax due to all these uncertainties.

How did you earn your money?

I decided relatively early to establish myself professionally using my creative abilities in order to earn enough money if necessary. I believed that this way, as a state-approved artist, I would also be able to further advance my musical projects in word, sound and image.

I was already working intensively and passionately as a photographer at that time, for quite some time at the theatre, and I realised early on that I also liked light design and photography. I was always interested professionally in photographs of people and in what we now call "people photography" in the broadest sense.

I have done portraits of many actors and created my own photo productions in the studio. The first step was fashion photography, where I was able to create some very interesting projects. But in 1990 a lot of fashion companies went bankrupt and I lost a lot of money. That made me start to rethink things.

I reacted in a professional, fast and flexible manner. I developed my artistic activity with the product portfolio of an advertising agency more in the direction of product advertising and industry. Nevertheless, I didn't neglect artistic photo and video projects.

How did you manage that?

Between 1995 and 2000 I gradually developed into a creative multimedia specialist in Berlin and was one of the first companies in Germany with a multimedial internet presence.

I was booked as a musician in between, but financially not completely dependent on music due to my other multifaceted artistic activity.

In retrospect it is clear to me that my musical concept could not be pursued consistently this way, because I was selling my time elsewhere. However, I think time is also the greatest gift.

Could you still develop your music?

Absolutely! I see the whole thing in a very positive light. Unlike many musicians, I have taken detours, but now I am suddenly returning to a crossroads. My unused energy allows me to catch up even faster. Many of the ideas on the music cassettes still sounded like they did in the 80s before they were processed. Due to my extensive life experience my music has matured greatly today.

Obviously, I will now catch up quickly in other ways on what others have invested in "becoming known and networking" as musicians in their main profession for umpteen years, which by the way is a lot of money, work and sweat.

But you don't lose energy.

Many musicians basically had to work parallel in order to finance themselves. I didn't do anything else. But since my creativity is also my passion, I simply went in a different direction and now have other means to follow my path, which I didn't have back then.

Parallel to being independent, I still played in some bands. In the course of my professional career I started several projects with my own compositions. As I worked with artists time and again, there were many hurdles that prevented me from continuing with these projects. All people involved have their own lives and sometimes stand in their own way.

This finally led to the decision to work on my own compositions as dance versions again in 2016 after a few breaks. In 2019 I decided to take the next logical step in this direction.

Musicians are usually not marketing specialists. Do you benefit from your professional experience?

I really hope so. I've always seen myself as a hybrid: I am a marketing specialist with an artistic, musical background. That's why I understand artists very well, but I can intellectually address both areas and use both.

I've spent decades advising other entrepreneurs on how to do this. Now it’s time to follow my own advice.

In 2016, I created an extensive MINDMAP because I realised that the whole thing could only work if I saw myself as my own customer.

In fact, this was the most significant realisation.

The MINDMAP showed me that the scope of my music project was so large that I had actually become my biggest customer. At first this frightened me a lot and tired me, but in the meantime, I’ve passed the critical energetic point and now it is beginning to flow.

I equipped my music studio sufficiently for my first intensive pre-productions and arrangements. My aim was to present my music to a suitable producer in an understandable way using enjoyable pre-produced recordings and to inspire him with it.

I have now reached this goal and hope to release my first album with a professional recording studio and sound engineer and some guest musicians in 2020.

That sounds like a personal breakthrough, right?

Bull's eye! That’s exactly how it feels. My debut album is only now being produced, but I'm really happy that this is happening.

It would have been much more tragic if I hadn't even pursued this dream.

I feel young and I feel young enough to start making music now.

We'll see what happens and what I can influence.

My motto for 2019 is: "Just get started and do it.” I'm ready to go.

What do you think makes your music special?

I believe, after intensive research, that the mix and style of my music is very unique. Amid the flooding of music across platforms like Spotify, Deezer and iTunes, I imagine that there is a lot of room for something new and special: Danceable compositions, influences of other cultures, good grooves, clear structures and sounds, music with power and recognition value.

What do you imagine your album will look like?

People hear my song … (draft)

First and foremost, I want my music to reach people, who turn up the streaming services or the radio loudly, remember the songs and make as much hip movement as possible on the dance floors.

Preferably also at bigger live concerts.

Secondly, I hope that the lyrics will also be received in a cheerful, lively way and that the songs will perhaps be looked at in greater detail.

My song "People hear my song" is about phases of searching, of self-discovery, of "questioning one's self", of viewing many things in a new light and of impartially evaluating once again whether "it" was/is the right path.

I experience my life in cycles. These phases include doubts, questions and also the search for the "there is still something in you that wants to be fulfilled". I'm sure every artist is familiar with that, ... maybe almost every individual?

And after each cycle there was clarity, freshness, change and growth. - It was the same for me. After an exhausting time, I experienced "clarification", the blue sky.

The "returning", the "being there again", the phase of "questioning yourself", the phase of "perhaps becoming estranged to others", but perhaps afterwards finally being on your own " path" once again in harmony with your own " journey " with your own "mission", this lets you be present again.

"People, People hear my song - where have I been for so long"

"Hey guys, where have I been for so long," also says, "hey friends, I noticed it, too.” I wasn't really there anymore. I was in hiding, ...but now - come celebrate with me - I'm back.

The release of the first SINGLE was  July 17, 2020.

I also see myself as a European and an African in a strong community that should stick together to help achieve a peaceful balance in the world. That's why one line of a song says: [...] We are Europe and not just our homeland. […]
